Liverpool are likely to sign a young centre-back this summer as one of their priorities in the transfer market, with Chelsea’s Levi Colwill someone of long-term interest to the Reds.
That’s according to LFC journalist Neil Jones in the latest edition of his Daily Briefing column, as he spoke exclusively to CaughtOffside about what we can expect the Merseyside giants to do in terms of re-shaping their squad ahead of next season.
Colwill seems an ambitious target as he’s done well at Chelsea after last season’s hugely impressive loan spell at Brighton, so it seems highly unlikely that Liverpool would be easily able to persuade the Blues to let the 21-year-old join a major rival.
Still, a player of that mould could be on Liverpool’s radar, according to Jones, who also mentioned links with Willian Pacho of Eintracht Frankfurt, even if he’s not currently aware of anything concrete happening there.
Colwill transfer: Could Liverpool sign the Chelsea youngster?
Levi Colwill to Liverpool?
Colwill seems like an interesting one to watch with Liverpool for the future, even if it seems this one is unlikely to happen this summer.
If the England international does end up leaving Chelsea, however, Jones has made it clear that he’d expect Liverpool to be in the picture for him.
“Of all the areas Liverpool could strengthen this summer, I believe centre-back is the most obviously in need,” Jones said.
“Their interest in Levi Colwill is long-standing, and there were suggestions of a bid last summer before he signed his new contract at Chelsea. I don’t expect the Londoners to sell Colwill this time around, but if they did then I would expect Liverpool to be in the mix.
“Willian Pancho of Eintracht Frankfurt has also been linked, but I am not aware of anything concrete in that one. What I would say is that the player’s age, experience and potential certainly makes him an interesting prospect. I would be surprised if Liverpool do not sign a young centre-back this summer.”
