Manchester United shocked the English football world by beating crosstown rivals Manchester City 2-1 to take home the FA Cup. After the match, embattled United manager Erik ten Hag took a bold shot at his current employer, warning them what will happen if they do sack him now that the 2023-24 season is officially wrapped up.
โTwo trophies in two years is not bad, three finals in two years is not bad,โ Ten Hag said in a postmatch press conference on Saturday, per ESPN. โIf they donโt want me, then I go somewhere else to win trophies because that is what I do.โ
United upset City, the holders of the Premier League title with goals by Alejandro Garnacho and 19-year-old Kobbie Mainoo in the first half. Cityโs Jeremy Doku pulled one back in the 89th minute, but it was too little, too late for Pep Guardiola and company.
Now all eyes turn toward Manchester United to see what they do with their manager.
What happens next to Erik ten Hag and Manchester United?

This is the boldest proclamation to date by Erik ten Hag who is under fire after two tough seasons on the red side of Manchester. ย The Dutch manager moved to Manchester United in 2022 after a successful five-year run with the iconic Netherlands side, Ajax. Managing the club in his home country, Ten Hag won three Eredivisie titles and two KNVB Cups.
At United, Ten Hag now has a Carabao Cup and an FA Cup on his resume. He also has a 41-12-23 record in the Premier League, good for third and eighth-place finishes in 2022-23 and 2023-24, respectively.
That third-place finish last season got them into the Champions League this year where United finished dead last in Group A behind Bayern Munich, Copenhagen, and Galatasaray.
While most clubs would kill for two trophies, top-10 finishes, and European football, Man U is not like most clubs. United had struggled overall since the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down in 2013.
In the ensuing 11 years, United has gone through eight full-time or caretaker managers. These unsuccessful leaders were David Moyes, Ryan Giggs, Louis van Gaal, Josรฉ Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjรฆr, Michael Carrick, ย Ralf Rangnick, and now Erik ten Hag.
Rumors are that Manchester United wants to pull the trigger yet again after the disappointing EPL and UCL finishes. However, winning the FA Cup to earn the club trophies in back-to-back seasons may just save the Dutchmanโs job.
If this FA Cup win is too little, too late, though, it seems as though the Red Devils have their list of next managers down to a small group of four choices. Those coaches are former Borussia Dortmund, PSG, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel, former Tottenham, PSG, and Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino, current Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna and current Brentford manager Thomas Frank.
