Borussia Dortmund will decide next week whether to pursue Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood. As the German club prepares for the Champions League final against Real Madrid, they are monitoring Greenwood’s situation at Manchester United.

Greenwood, 22, spent the past season on loan at Spanish club Getafe, where he scored eight goals in 33 La Liga matches. His loan spell ends this summer, and he is expected to return to Manchester United with one year remaining on his contract.

Besides Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Atletico Madrid are also interested in Greenwood. Dortmund, known for developing young talent, might find Greenwood a suitable addition. This follows their successful loan acquisition of Jadon Sancho from Manchester United in January.

At a media event for the Champions League, Dortmund’s sporting director, Sebastian Kehl, addressed the transfer rumors. Kehl stated, “I don’t want to talk about any rumors now at the moment because it makes no sense. Let’s play that final on Saturday.”

Kehl continued, “Of course, we do have our plans for the next season, and of course we discuss many scenarios, but nothing for today. Let’s focus, let’s anticipate that match on Saturday, and then we’ll see how we move on.” When asked if Greenwood was a player Dortmund admired, Kehl declined to comment further.

Greenwood’s Journey and Prospects after Manchester United

Greenwood has not played for Manchester United since January 2022, following a 1-0 win against West Ham. Shortly after, he was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault, with Greater Manchester Police referencing “social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence.” In February 2023, all charges were dropped due to the withdrawal of key witnesses.

Greenwood significantly impacted during his loan spell at Getafe, earning the club’s player-of-the-year award. While Getafe hopes to keep him on loan, Manchester United prefers a permanent transfer. United plans to activate a one-year extension on Greenwood’s contract if another loan deal occurs.

Dortmund’s interest in Greenwood aligns with their strategy of nurturing young players. The club has a strong track record of developing talent and providing growth opportunities. Greenwood could benefit from such an environment, potentially reviving his career after a challenging period.

As Borussia Dortmund and other clubs consider their options, Greenwood’s future remains uncertain. His impressive performance in Spain has certainly caught the eye of several top European clubs. Whether he stays at Manchester United, returns to Getafe, or moves to a new club like Borussia Dortmund will be decided in the coming weeks.
